From Michael: 2/13/07 My Mom, still living in Darien, called me yesterday and said she had just gotten off the phone with Ann Durland, mother of one of my best pals when I was growing up (Johnny D). Ann told my Mom about this site and so it goes. It's been fun reading through the various comments, so I thought I'd add some of my own. After High School, I went on to The Rhode Island School of Design. Big time hippie school back then, but oddly my freshman year there they had an actual basketball team. Kind of a rag-tag bunch, we were the Red Devils and played in the Jr. and small college circuit all around Rhode Island. Anyone who might remember how I used to love playing on Saturday mornings with George Nelson and all the guys can imagine the fun I had playing with a bunch of wild free spirit artists back then. I think my high point was a game we played in Cranston against who knows Jr. College where I went absolutely crazy and just kept scoring. After the game my coach named me captain for the rest of the season. I don't know that I ever had another game like that. In fact, I'm certain I didn't. My senior year at RISD I hooked up with a woman visiting from Barnard College (NYC). When she went back, I went with her. I wound up going to graduate school at Columbia and was thinking about teaching when a job came open at The New York Review of Books. All this while I'd been painting and making ceramic sculpture. I went through a number of jobs at The Review over the years and wound up as Manager of Subscriptions and Direct Sales for the last 20 years. I also had a number of shows of my paintings and continued on with all that. I finally met my wife back in 1988 and it took us a while to decide to marry. She's 15 years younger than I but was really the first woman I met in my adult life who I really connected with. (As a painter and living in the "Literary" world, the women I went out with for years were aspiring writers with really no time for something like a family and kids.) Thank God this finally happened. Francie and I have two fantastic little girls, ages 9 and 6 1/2 (Eva and Leila). Man, talk about kids keeping you young. We go out rollerblading for kicks. I'm teaching Leila how to be there and ready for a buttonhook pass. She excellent at it after only several days and hours of play/practice. Eva's just a total athlete. She's a ballerina and really tall for her age and just extraordinary. We live up in what's known as Hudson Heights (NYC) up next to the Cloisters. Great neighborhood. We go up to New Hampshire for several weeks every summer where the kids have learned to swim and life is so peaceful. Last August (after a 33 year career) I began to sense that my days at The NY Review of Books were numbered. I got into an extremely awkward situation with the powers that be and wound up being laid off. Now I'm a full time painter. The extra time has really served me well and I think my work is progressing. Anyone interested in seeing some of my work, send me your e-mail address and I'll send you some pictures. I do pretty well selling, which comes in very handy now that I'm no longer drawing a salary. My love for painting and drawing has really sustained me during a pretty rough transition time. I'm always thinking about the growing up years in Darien. Those were some wild times. I remember that I kind of situated myself in a middle ground between the Suds and the Oaks with good pals in both camps and all the wonderful experiences , some rocky and confusing, and some pure bliss. I'd love to hear from anyone who wants to be in touch. Mike

From Alan W.: It was such a pleasure seeing former classmates at our 40th reunion, and learning what everyone has been up to all these years. In fact, I was recently in contact with Howie Thompson, and had the privilege of reading his latest novel, 'OverTime.' Who knew that Howie could write!
Class of '67's Thompson
goes into 'OverTime'
If you are interested, you may read my book review for 'OverTime' in our Guest Book section.
I have also kept in contact with Garrett/aka Garry Brown, and had an opportunity to read his one-act play "AMERICANA." We all knew that Garry could act, but did we ever suspect he was such a gifted writer too.
GARRETT M. BROWN'S 'AMERICANA'
Takes you back to 1958 New England
'AMERICANA'
If you would like to read my review of 'AMERICANA,' you may check it out in our Guest Book section too. Both reviews were published on the front page of The Darien Times. In the meantime, I am currently writing a screenplay for Howie's novel "OverTime."
I retired in 1996 from the corporate world of technical marketing and sales within the computer software industry. Since I had been writing for some time, I decided that this would be a great opportunity for me to pursue a life-long dream. In 1997 I returned to graduate school and was surprised to see so many baby boomers attending classes. I subsequently earned both a Master of Fine Arts degree in English & Writing, and a Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing.
My retirement years continue to be full, and I particularly enjoy the added leisure time to read and write with a special interest in 19th Century American Literature and The Gilded Age -- also known as The Era of Extravagance. Sound familiar? Perhaps there is some truth to that old adage about history repeating itself.
Call me crazy but I have recently entertained the possibility of going on for a Ph.D. in literature. I know, what am I thinking? Nevertheless, with only eight graduate courses to take, and an opportunity to teach college students -- how can I possibly refuse such an offer? Besides, the university will waive my tuition, provide me with free health-care and a handsome stipend too. Whoever said that retirement had to be boring.
I have two children, Jenifer, age 35 and Chad, age 31, who are both married and graduated from the University of Maine. Jen has a precocious seven-year-old daughter name "Kai" (Kylera) whom I understand likes to read and write too. Chad is currently in graduate school at Bath University in Bath, England where he is pursuing his Ph.D within the Department of Social and Policy Sciences. Would you believe he wants to earn a doctorate in Death & Society? Don't ask me why? Well, at least with almost 80-million American baby boomers, he will most certainly have his work cut-out for him, and hopefully won't have to stand in the unemployment line.
My plans for the future are to move from Darien to Bedford, New Hampshire, within an hour’s drive of Boston where I will be close to the lakes, mountains and ocean. I also hope to do some adjunct teaching in creative writing and literature at the university graduate level too.
Nancy and her supporters (including her husband, Jay) did an outstanding job putting together and organizing our successful 40th reunion, and for this I am most indebted and grateful.
(My twin brother, Rand (deceased) is on the red Honda 50 cc and I am on the blue one. Picture taken in 1967. As you may recall, Rand was Captain of our first D.H.S. undefeated Gymnastic Team under the guidance of Coach Isadore Battino.
I continue to keep in touch with a number of classmates, and would enjoy hearing from you. Anymore writers out there?

From Nancy: This will be the first reunion of any type I have ever been to. Over the years, I have lived in Berkeley, England, New Haven, Panama, Switzerland - am now in La Jolla CA and may well be moving to DC. I am lucky to be paid for what I love doing, which is studying the ocean. My daughter is 21, my husband of over 20 years is a scientist too, and thanks to his son I am a step-grandmother. Can it really be 40 years??

From John: Hello, everyone. After high school I went to Boston College and then did graduate work at the Univ. of Maryland where I met my wife Karen. After school we moved to New Jersey and worked for 5 years in New York City where I recall running into Larry Magnant in the subway! After our first daughter (3 daughters in all) was born we decided to move closer to the grandparents which were either back in Washington DC or in the Chicago area. The Chicago offer came through first and I've been here in Illinois outside of Chicago for the last 28 years. My job gave me the opporuntiy to travel throughout the US as well as Asia and Europe and on a couple of my trips back East I took a spin by DHS for old-times sake. I just recently retired and I'm looking forward to connecting with people again at the reunion.
